After 52 years away, Haiti's Grenadiers returned to the FIFA World Cup in 2026. This is the story of how we got there, and what we did once we arrived.
The Long Road
For fifty two years, Haiti's return to football's biggest stage felt like a distant dream. The Grenadiers came agonizingly close more than once, only to fall short in the final rounds. Behind every campaign stood real obstacles: a national stadium too often ruled below FIFA standards, forcing home qualifiers to be played hundreds of miles away in Curaçao and Florida; a federation working with a fraction of the resources wealthier nations take for granted; a country carrying the weight of political instability and daily hardship that made every training session, every flight, every match an act of will. Through it all, the diaspora never let go. From Miami to Montreal to Paris, Haitians filled stadiums that were never technically "home" and made them sound like it anyway.
Qualification
Haiti's road to the 2026 World Cup came down to the final matchday of Concacaf qualifying. On November 18, 2025, in Willemstad, Curaçao, goals from Don Deedson Louicius and Ruben Providence secured a 2-0 win over Nicaragua, clinching Haiti's first World Cup qualification since 1974. When the final whistle blew, players collapsed to the turf in tears while, thousands of miles away, an entire diaspora erupted in celebration.
The Tournament
At the tournament itself, Haiti was drawn into a group built to test even the most seasoned sides: Scotland, Brazil, and Morocco. Three games, three lessons, and moments the country will never forget.
The Three Games
Scotland0-1June 13, 2026. Gillette Stadium, Foxborough. Fifty two years of waiting came down to this kickoff. Scott McTominay rattled the crossbar early, and in the 28th minute John McGinn's shot took a cruel deflection off a Haiti defender and beat Johny Placide. Haiti pushed hardest late, Ruben Providence's cross just eluding Wilson Isidor in the 74th minute and Frantzdy Pierrot's header drifting wide in the 84th. Scotland held on to win 1-0, their first World Cup victory since 1990, and Haiti's historic first match since 1974 ended agonizingly close to a different result.

Brazil0-3June 19, 2026. Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia. Five time champions Brazil made their class count in a first half that got away from Haiti fast. Matheus Cunha struck twice, in the 23rd and 36th minutes, before Vinicius Junior added a third deep into first half stoppage time. All three goals came before the break, Brazil's front three finding space behind Haiti's high defensive line again and again. The 3-0 defeat, following the loss to Scotland, meant Haiti became the tournament's first team eliminated, with one match still to play.

Morocco2-4June 24, 2026. Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta. This was no formality. A back heeled flick from Lenny Joseph put Haiti ahead inside ten minutes, the Atlas Lions' first real scare of the tournament. Achraf Hakimi pulled Morocco level before the break, only for Wilson Isidor to restore Haiti's lead with a stunning strike four minutes later. Ismael Saibari snatched an equalizer right before halftime, and Morocco finally pulled clear in the second half through Soufiane Rahimi and a stoppage time goal from Gessime Yassine to close it out 4-2. Haiti had led twice against a team that would go on to finish second in the group. Their World Cup debut ended in defeat, but not before giving the whole country a night it will never forget.

Two Goals For The Ages
Haiti's only two goals of the tournament both came in that final match against Morocco, and both are the kind fans replay for years.
Lenny Joseph
Just ten minutes into Haiti's final group game, Lenny Joseph turned provider in the most unexpected way: a back heeled flick at the near post beat Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and rolled into his own net. It was Haiti's first World Cup goal since 1974, and it sent the stadium into delirium.

Wilson Isidor
Four minutes before halftime, with Morocco having just leveled the score, Wilson Isidor picked the ball up well outside the box and let fly. The strike flew into the top corner with the goalkeeper rooted to his line, restoring Haiti's lead and giving the whole country a moment it will replay forever. Fans worldwide later voted it the third best goal of the entire 2026 World Cup.
